The 2025 San Francisco Bar Trivia Open Tournament

July 16, 2025 until September 17, 2025

El Lopo Presents: The 2025 San Francisco Bar Trivia Open Tournament

(or the “Lopo Trivia Open” for short)

Qualifying will run Wednesdays July 16-August 13, with a double elimination tournament starting August 20. The winner will be crowned September 17, and will receive a 50% bonus to all their trivia winnings for the rest of the year!

Prizes

First place in the tournament: 50% bonus to all trivia winnings for the remainder of 2025. That means that instead of the usual two porrons a day for 1st / $20 certificate for 2nd / $10 certificate for 3rd at regular trivia nights, your team will be able to win three porrons a day / $30 / $15 every time for the rest of the year. And if the tournament winner ever gets last place at a regular trivia night, we'll let them pick two topics for the following week!

Qualification

There are 2 ways to qualify. Either:

  • Play trivia at El Lopo on a Wednesday from July 16 to August 13.
Your team will earn qualification points based on your position if you finish in the top 5 (1st place = 5 points, 5th place = 1 point).
The “Lopo bracket” will be filled in by the top teams at the end of this five week qualification period.

    OR

  • Win trivia at one of our partner bars: The Red Tail (either location), Fishbowl Bar & Grill, The Beer Hall, O’Reilly’s Pub, Danny Coyle. You’ll get a coupon for $10 off for your order at El Lopo on a non-Wednesday, and if you redeem that, you’ll automatically get a seeding in the “Polo bracket”.

You may do both for a chance at a higher seeding in the tournament.

Gameplay

  • During the entire tournament, trivia will remain the same. Tournament points will be assigned separately from the game points.

    • You are welcome to change your team name week-to-week, but you’ll need to settle on one team name for tournament purposes.

    • Prizes will still be given as normal, and then tournament prizes awarded.

  • During qualifying, your team can be up to 8 people as usual.

    • Once tournament play begins, you’ll need to identify a team of up to 5 players with two alternates. Only they will be able to play for your team in the tournament.

  • Regular Lopo trivia power-ups can be used to benefit you in tournament play, but Super Special Tournament Power-ups (SSTPs) can only be used for tournament point benefit.

    • As usual, one regular Lopo power-up can be played per round, and

    • One SSTP can be played per game.

Super Special Tournament Power-Ups (SSTPs)

Come to El Lopo on a non-Wednesday to get regular game power-ups, and a chance for one of these:

  • (Sunday) Double Trouble: Your tournament score will be doubled. You can’t get less than 2 tournament points, no matter where you score.

  • (Monday) Climb the Ladder: Automatically finish one position higher at the end of the game, pushing the team ahead of you down one.

    • The latest this can be played is at the end of the third round.

  • (Tuesday) Sherryoke Star: Sing two songs at sherryoke Tuesday night to get this, which gives you 2 tournament points no matter where you finish.

  • (Thursday) Blue Shell: Whoever finishes in first place tonight (even if it’s you) will get 0 points in the tournament.

    • The latest this can be played is at the end of the third round.

  • (Friday) Roll the Bones: Sacrifice your tournament points for the game, and roll a die to get your score for the night.

    • The latest this can be played is at the end of the second round.

  • (Saturday) Pity Point: Automatically get one tournament point.
