sherry week with el lopo

November 6th-12th is International Sherry Week this year, and true to form, El Lopo is way overdoing it.

On our staff trip to the motherland in October, for one reason or another, most of us were not checking bags. BUT we had our favorite bottle-mule, Tim, bring back a bunch of unique bottles … and most of them made it here unharmed and un-confiscated! We resolved not to open any until Sherry Week, and we’ve just about made it. We'll be pouring tastes all week, or until they're gone.

New for this year, you can now reserve a tasting experience with the owner Daniel on any night of Sherry Week. He'll check in with you to learn a bit about your palate and gauge what you already know about sherry, and pick out all your food and beverages based on your guidelines. We're only offering this to three groups per night to make sure they all get Daniel's full attention.

As in previous years, our regular Tuesday night ritual of Sherry-Oke is being extended to all seven days of Sherry Week. For the uninitiated: anyone brave enough to get up and sing unlocks $5 glasses of sherry for the rest of the night. This year, our friends at Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana are partnering with us so we can offer their whole line on tap for Sherry-Oke!

Another of El Lopo’s #sherryweek traditions makes its return on Thursday the 9th, when Certified Sherry Educator Sean Norton guides us through a seated tasting class. This ticketed event with an optional food pairing is limited to 12 attendees, and will go into depth about the histories and winemaking techniques behind five very distinct glasses of dry sherry that each guest will try. A food pairing option with a few special dishes will also be available to anyone who wants to make a dinner out of it.

Perhaps most exciting, we'll also be hosting our second annual San Francisco Sherry Week Bingo - a collaborative game that challenges players to seek out our favorite fortified experiences at different bars and restaurants all across town. This year, we've upped the count of participating businesses from 10 to 24, and attracted the attention of the actual Sherry D.O. in doing so. We're proud to have gotten San Francisco featured as one of only two "Sherry Week Rutas" in the US! As if the chase itself weren’t rewarding enough, the participating bars and restaurants have put up a variety of food and drink prizes to give you some extra motivation.
